Energy security in an insecure world | Business Beyond
Throughout modern history, global economic growth has been based on countries and industries having access to reliable, relatively cheap energy. But energy security can easily be threatened. In 2022, a slew of crises have converged to raise serious questions about this most critical of topics. The aftermath of the pandemic, raging global conflict, geopolitical rivalries and the worsening climate crisis have raised a decisive question for the planet: can it continue to power itself without deepening inequality?

Every year, the world uses 35 billion barrels of oil. This massive scale of fossil fuel dependence pollutes the earth, and it won’t last forever. On the other hand, we have abundant sun, water and wind, which are all renewable energy sources. So why don’t we exchange our fossil fuel dependence for an existence based only on renewables? Federico Rosei and Renzo Rosei describe the challenges.

Strengthening Europe's energy security
Europe imports more than half of its energy. The war in Ukraine has shown that this must change, and we should reduce our dependency on Russian gas and oil as soon as possible.
To achieve this common goal, we should drastically accelerate our clean energy transition and increase Europe's energy independence from unreliable suppliers and volatile fossil fuels.
The European Investment Bank invested €17bn in clean energy projects in the EU and supported European Commission's REPowerEU plan with an additional €30bn in financing by 2027.

In the near future, the energy made in the US is going to be much greener. The country’s current goal is for solar plants alone to make nearly half of US electricity by 2050. But we can’t just build solar plants where coal and gas plants used to be. They have to be built where it's… sunny. And wind turbines have to be built where it’s windy. The problem is, that’s not always where the people who need the power are.
The distance from energy source to energy need is about to get a lot bigger. And the US is going to need more high-voltage transmission lines. A lot more. As soon as possible. While solar plants can be built relatively fast, hig...

Stealing Electricity (The safe way)
In this video i build a coil that's effectively a huge loopstick antenna with tuning capacitors to resonate at 60 Hz, which is mains frequency in North America. The coil can generate over 5 volts near running appliances or power cables, and charge a capacitor or light up some LEDs. It works by collecting the small magnetic flux leakage that every AC device produces.
The power generated is less than 100 μW in most cases, so it can't do anything very exciting, but it's really interesting to stand under a power line and see a capacitor charge from its leak. The biggest limiting factor seems to be that transmission lines which have opposite phases very close to each other result in a near-zero magnetic field at a distance from canceling out most of each others magnetic flux.

How free energy will change the world | Simon Bransfield-Garth | TEDxParklandsWomen
For years, people living in rural areas in Sub-Saharan Africa have faced the challenge of low access to reliable electricity. Due to the high cost of transmitting grid power to these often scattered communities, they are usually left with no or unreliable access to electricity. By combining the power of mobile money and solar energy, the micro-grid industry offers a solution to these communities. In this free-flowing talk, Simon shares the lessons he has learned in his quest to bring cheap reliable electricity to underserved communities. He gives illuminating insights as to the impact this brings to the people and shares the idea of using energy for the greater good. Simon Bransfield-Garth is CEO of Azuri Technologies, a business that combines the latest solar innovation with mobile paymen...

Life:Powered – Geopolitical Energy Security
Access to energy shapes the security of our world. As we’ve seen recently in the war between Russia and Ukraine, dependence on other countries for energy imports significantly impacts the ability of Americans to procure affordable and reliable energy, which is the lifeblood of our prosperity.
In this video, Life:Powered explains the importance of increasing the domestic supply of energy resources and exporting our responsibly produced energy to the rest of the world.

While solar plants can be built relatively fast, high-voltage transmission projects can take up to 10 years. So experts say we need to start proactively building them, right now.

Some figures:
Coil Wire Gauge: 28 AWG
Number of turns: ~12,000
Coil Inductance: 28.1 H
Capacitor Value: 250 nF
Parts:

For years, people living in rural areas in Sub-Saharan Africa have faced the challenge of low access to reliable electricity. Due to the high cost of transmitting grid power to these often scattered communities, they are usually left with no or unreliable access to electricity. By combining the power of mobile money and solar energy, the micro-grid industry offers a solution to these communities. In this free-flowing talk, Simon shares the lessons he has learned in his quest to bring cheap reliable electricity to underserved communities. He gives illuminating insights as to the impact this brings to the people and shares the idea of using energy for the greater good. Simon Bransfield-Garth is CEO of Azuri Technologies, a business that combines the latest solar innovation with mobile payment technology to bring affordable, clean energy to the 600 million people in sub-Saharan Africa that have no access to mains power. Simon has developed Azuri Technologies into a leading pay-as-you-go off-grid solar home solutions provider with a vast network of agents and distributors across sub-Saharan Africa. He is an award-winning entrepreneur with a passion for technology and the role it plays in addressing some of the biggest challenges facing developing economies.
Through state-of-the-art innovation, Simon believes African economies can bypass costly traditional infrastructure to directly access the digital world and knowledge-based economy. Simon has spent the last 30 years building rapid growth, technology-based businesses in a range of sectors including, automotive and telecoms sectors. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
